The Orientals of the Scherzi descend from the Magi who appeared in Bethlehem and also from the followers of Hermes Trismegistus. Their doctrine is the prisca Aegyptiorum sapientia. The port where they landed in Europe was Venice. Tiepolo merely had to make slight variations on figures that had already emerged around him, from Giorgione to Veronese.
